Lincoln is the state capitol of Nebraska, located in Lancaster County. It is the second largest city in Nebraska, following Omaha. Most Omahans drive to Lincoln to see a Husker football game or a concert at Pershing Auditorium.
Origin of Name. 
When Nebraska became a state, Omaha was the territorial capitol. It was decided that Lancaster would change its name to Lincoln and that it should be the official state capitol.

The Nebraska History Museum (15th and P St.) has numerous exhibits covering early pioneer life to modern time. The gallery is open 9 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. Monday through Friday, 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. Saturday, 1:30 P.M. to 5 P.M. Sunday, Admission: Free; 402-471-4754 or 800-833-6747.
The University Place Art Center (2601 N. 48th St.) has art by faculty members. The gallery is open 10 A.M. to 5 P.M. Monday through Saturday, 402-466-8692.
The University of Nebraska State Museum a.k.a. State Museum of Natural History and Mueller Planetarium at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln covers the night sky that is not so easily visible in city lights. Shows at 2 P.M. The Pioneers Park Nature Center (2740 A St.) has several exhibits of Nebraska area history. The center is open 8 A.M. to 8:30 P.M. Tuesday through Saturday, and 12 P.M. to 8:30 P.M. Sunday, 402-795-2144.
Nearby Pleasant Dale has has the Prairie Peace Park exhibiting a world peace mural, a population exhibit, and a children's maze. The park is located at Interstate exit 388. The park is open 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. Tuesday through Saturday, and 1 P.M. to 5 P.M. Sunday, 402-795-2144.
The Rollerskating Museum is located in Lincoln. (4730 South Street) The museum is open 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. Monday through Saturday, and closed on Sundays and major holidays. Admission is free - 402-483-7551, extension 16.
The International Headquarters of the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia (631 D St.) Museum covers the culture and history of Germans from Russia. When in Lincoln, don't miss visiting the Hyde Memorial Observatory. You can see the stars for free. The facility is totally operated by a volunteer staff. No matter how old you are, you can't grow out of looking at the stars. Free., 402-441-7094.
The Governor's Mansion (1425 H St.) art exhibit is open for viewing 1 P.M. to 4 P.M. Thursdays, Admission: Free.
The Folsom Children's Zoo and Botanical Gardens (1222 S. 22th St.) has hundreds of butterflies native to North America on display. The facility is open 10 A.M. to 5 P.M. daily; Admission: adults, $5; senior citizens, $4; children aged 2 to 11, $3; children younger than 2, free.
The Haymarket District (7th to 9th - O to R.) is a great spot to spend a Sunday afternoon. You can get additional information at the Historic Haymarket website.
The Frank H. Woods Telephone Pioneer Museum (2047 M. St.) displays Alexander Graham Bell's original concepts and drawings of the telephone. Tours are available on request. Admission: Free, 402-436-4640, work 402-436-5597, home 402-423-4716.
The International Quilt Study Center on the UNL campus (35th and Holdredge) displays the history of quilt making, fabrics, etc. with lots of displays. (402) 472-6301
