We can read most word processing file formats and output from most other programs as well. As a result, we can create Adobe PDF (Portable Document Format) files from most programs. These files have many advantages. If you send data files to a remote user, you may not wish to share your original document. Even if you are willing, the remote user may not have the same word processing software or operating system as you have. As a result, the document may not be readable, or will not have the same appearance as what you see. We can preserve the original appearance by creating a PDF file format. The file can be read by the free downloadable Acrobat Reader program. The program to create the PDF files is a program that has to be purchased.
Keep in mind that not all typefaces can be embedded into PDF documents. Embedding ability is typeface by typeface independent. Most Windows supplied and Adobe supplied typefaces allow embedding.
If you send files to print bureaus to be printed on their printer, you need to send a file that contains all of the typeface image information, formatting, and images. The PDF file format simplifies the process. The files can also be published on the web and retain the original appearance.
If you need to send graphics but do not wish to share the actual graphic file, you can send it as a PDF document. The end result file is usually smaller than the starting graphic file.
